VILNIUS, Jun 22, BNS – No pollution with hazardous substances has been found in the River Nemunas in Lithuania, the country's Environment Ministry said on Monday.

Tests have shown no presence of the majority of substances tested, including heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, chlorophenols and polychlorinated biphenyls, and low concentrations of several substances have been found.

"Water's ecotoxicity tests have been done and they have shown that the water of the River Nemunas is not toxic, i.e., it's not dangerous to water organisms," the ministry said.

Water samples were taken near Lithuania's southern cities of Druskininkai and Alytus following report of fish and other water animals dying in the River Nemanus near Grodno in Belarus.

BNS reminds that Lithuanian presented a note to Belarus when requesting information on possible pollution in the River Nemunas.
