VILNIUS, Jun 22, BNS – Lithuania's Interior Ministry is organizing a public consultation to find out whether there's a need for citizens to have a second valid passport.

The ministry says it has received citizens' requests in recent years to make it possible for citizens to have a second passport for cases when, for example, a person's passport is submitted to receive a foreign state's visa and that person needs to travel to a foreign country that does not accept ID cards.

"For a second passport to be issued, the ministry will need to draft amendments to the ID card and passport laws and accompanying legislation, and the state's existing registers and information systems will need to be changed, and that might cost around 1,5 million euros," the ministry said.

Currently, a Lithuanian citizen can only have two identity confirming documents – an ID card and a passport, or one of the two.

The public consultation will take place online.
