VILNIUS, Jan 07, BNS – Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Tuesday called for identifying those responsible for the pollution of the Curonian Lagoon as law enforcement launched an investigation into environmental pollution involving untreated wastewater in Klaipeda.

"I strongly condemn any environmental pollution in Lithuania, irrespective of its scope. I am calling on responsible institutions to identify and publicly name the real scope of pollution in the Curonian Lagoon and those responsible for that," Nauseda posted on Facebook.

"No activity can be carried out at the expense of future generations. Nobody has and will not have the right to damage people's health and ecosystem," he added.

It was reported earlier that Lithuanian prosecutors on Monday launched an investigation into environmental pollution involving untreated wastewater in Klaipeda.

Based on information from the Environmental Protection Department, Grigeo Klaipeda, a company producing cardboard in the seaport, is responsible for the pollution.

Specialists from the Environmental Protection Department have ordered the company to immediately halt pollution. The department also plans to carry out an unplanned inspection at the company and investigation that will also involve the assessment of environmental damage based on the amount of released wastewater.

Environmental pollution in Lithuania is punishable by a fine, arrest or up to six years in prison.
