Lithuanian president visits cyber security center in Kaunas

KAUNAS, Lithuania, Jan 07, BNS – The Kaunas-based National Cyber Security Center is one of the most capable institutions in this area in the world, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said after visiting the center on Tuesday.

It's important to continue moving forwards having achieved so much, the president said.

"It's one of the most capable cyber security centers even globally. It probably even excels our rivals and could teach some of them," the president told journalists after his visit. "But the key thing for us is not to stop and move forward to achieve our top goals as you will be excelled in this area if you stop."

During his visit to the National Cyber Security Center, Nauseda was introduced to its achievements in consolidating national cyber security capabilities and the progress of international cooperation on the creation of rapid anti-cyber response teams.

Special attention was given to the innovations being created by Lithuanian specialists, according to a statement by the presidential office. The head of state was introduced to instruments used by the center to ensure cyber protection of informational infrastructure of special importance.

During the visit, problems related to the protection of critical infrastructure were discussed, and the early prevention sensors being created and allowing identifying cyber attacks in their early stages before they do any damage were introduced.

Also, VRKIS, a system aimed at ensuring cyber security during the upcoming parliament election, was also presented.

The National Cyber Security Center has two equal branches in Vilnius and Kaunas.

Cyber security specialists from the US Pennsylvania National Guard have been directly involved in the establishment of the center and its activity, helping to install laboratories, and they also physically ensured system security during the presidential and European Parliament election last May.

Under the plan endorsed by the Lithuanian government six months ago, the EU Cyber Rapid Response Force, being established at Lithuania's initiative, can be managed from the National Cyber Security Center's Kaunas branch.
