VILNIUS, Apr 01, BNS – One cannot trust official Belarusian information on coronavirus, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda says, adding that the situation there might be much worse.

"We cannot trust that information we officially receive from Belarus as I see that the Belarusian leader is acting with a bit of bravado when assessing the situation," the president told journalists outside the Health Ministry on Wednesday morning.

"It's quite possible that the true figures are much worse as we know about certain outbreaks in the Belarusian territory and registered deaths," the said.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius also told the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday that the coronavirus crisis management in Belarus is not good, adding that restrictions on regular flights to Vilnius from Minks are now under consideration.

The president believes contact with the country failing to manage the situation should be restricted if that risk is tangible.

"I believe Mr. Linkevicius' comment is absolutely timely, and if that risk is really tangible, we need to restrict any contact with the country which is too relaxed at the moment towards the coronavirus outbreak and could face painful consequences," Nauseda said.

Belavia still operates regular flights from Minsk to Vilnius.

Belarus remains the only country in the region not to have closed border due to the coronavirus pandemic. Top-league football games have also not been canceled in the country, in contrast to the majority of other countries in the world.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday announced the death of the 1st person who had the coronavirus.

152 coronavirus cases had been confirmed in Belarus as of Monday.
