VILNIUS, Jan 10, BNS – Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs is leaving for Brussels on Friday to discuss the situation in the Middle East with his EU counterparts.

Tensions are rising in this region after the United States killed Iran's top General Qasem Soleimani last week and Teheran targeted two US and allied military bases in Iraq in ballistic missile attacks.

During the EU Foreign Affairs Council's extraordinary meeting, Linkevicius will present Lithuania's position that the country is very concerned over a possible increase in violence in the region as itt would seriously undermine security and stability in Iraq and the region. Consequences could extend beyond the Middle East region.

"Iran has to stop performing provocative actions. The situation must be de-escalated. Lithuania is closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to work with our partners and allies towards a diplomatic solution – the transatlantic unity remains crucial," Linkevicius was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Iran announced last week that it would not longer comply with uranium enrichment restrictions as part of the 2015 nuclear deal with global powers. Iran had vowed to limit its nuclear program under the agreement in exchange for the lifting of Western sanctions.
